Últimas sobre a lei anti-tabaco em Portugal
Independentemente de as razões serem de foro económico ou não, parece que o Governo quer flexibilizar a sua proposta de lei anti-tabaco, dando ao proprietário do restaurante/bar/disco o direito da escolha se no seu estabelecimento é permitido fumar ou não, muito à semelhança da lei que entrou em vigor na nossa vizinha Espanha no ano de 2006.
Segundo diversas sondagens, a grande maioria dos portuguesas é contra o tabaco em recintos fechados, nomeadamente restaurantes, bares e discotecas. É até dos países Europeus com maior percentagem contra o tabaco neste tipo de estabelecimentos, mas parece que o Governo não quer ouvir as estatísticas, não quer ouvir o que se passa lá fora (na França recentemente e agora na Inglaterra) e quer seguir o fiasco do exemplo espanhol.
Os proprietários da restauração, que sempre contestaram a proibição em nome da perda de clientes, aplaudem o recuo. Eu devo ser um bocado burrinho, pois não consigo perceber porque irão/iriam perder clientes. Se a lei fosse para todos, não havia alternativas para os fumadores que teriam que se adaptar aos novos hábitos. Pelo contrário, se houver livre escolha por parte destes, é que vai haver estabelecimentos que vão perder ou ganhar conforme a escolha que seguirem.
O Governo quer aprovar a lei até ao final deste mês. Por favor não sigam os exemplos falhados da vizinha Espanha e aprovem os vossos planos iniciais de proibição total! Os não fumadores também têm direitos!

London Yahoo! Hack day is over
London Yahoo! Hack Day is over and I’m back home. I have to say that it was really fun and I was impressed by the number of hacks presented. Despite the thunderbolt episode and the wireless problems on Saturday we had fun and presented over 70 hacks. That’s a lot of brain power together. 🙂
The other portugueses there and I created a team and presented metahack. Iain Collins, a cool guy from London was also part of the team. Check metahack page for more info.
While working on the hack, I realized how good the yahoo’s developer network site is. Very well organized and very clear documentation about their APIs.
London Yahoo! Hack day was attacked
Google hacked Hack Day, we were hit by a thunderbolt.
It was the only one and it hit Alexandra Palace and I don’t believe in coincidences. 🙂
Update: I guess the plans were revealed.
Triple Play PT
E pronto, acabou de ser lançada a oferta Triple Play da PT.
Finalmente podemos ter uma oferta de serviço de TV a la TiVO. Inicialmente com 40 canais, 10 destes escolhidos pelo cliente. A box tem naturalmente saída digital pelo que chega também HDTV. Só não percebi se já há emissão em HDTV ou se é só para filmes “alugados” no clube de vídeo virtual.
Quanto ao resto é o costume, VOIP com chamadas nacionais gratuitas para a rede fixa e Internet obviamente.
Quanto aos preços, 54.9EUR/mês com Internet a 8Mbps mais 7.5EUR/mês de aluguer da box. Colaboradores da PT com 50% de desconto na mensalidade. 🙂

Stop smoking and save!
I found the following advertisement in my Bank‘s Investment Magazine.
Basically, what it says is that if you stop smoking and save the money, in 10 years you can buy a motorcycle, in 20 years a car, and in 30 years a boat.
You would save 2.9EUR/day and invest the money. They use an annual interest of 7.25%. The reference price for the bike is 15k EUR, for the car 47k EUR and for the boat 112k EUR.
Stop smoking and start saving… 🙂

A Spam botnet Backoffice
Around 80% of the Spam messages on the Internet are sent by Spam Zombies. For those who don’t know what I’m talking about, Spam Zombies are normal PCs that were infected by some malicious software and then controlled by some spammer.
The spammer then uses a backoffice to send orders to those infected PCs, or basically to send spam for living..
This nice post from pmontoya, shows exactly what such a backoffice looks like.
Wine Tasting (IV)
Another Wine Tasting session with some friends. Well, I’m kind of late on updating my blog since it happened last week. 🙂
This time we did a “California vs Portugal”. I have a theory that says that a 30-40USD Wine from California is as good as a 10EUR Wine from Portugal.
I still believe in my theory, but unfortunately our choice of Portuguese wines was not that good this time. Too bad that we didn’t do this face-off last week, for the Wine Tasting (III) session.
We had 3 wines: one from California (Napa Valley), one from Douro and one from Bairrada:
- Blend 24, 2004, Napa Valley, California: A blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 10% Syrah. An excellent wine (and expensive), we all loved it. Aromas dominated by Berries, texture finishes with soft tannins and a bright acidity.
- Bairrada, Altoviso, garrafeira 1994: this wine is made only with 1 type of grape: Baga. I was expecting something as good as the last one that we tried last week – Primavera 1995. Unfortunately it was completely different, a lot worse than the previous one.
- Romeu, 2003, Douro: This one was definitively different than the Douro wines we are used to. It’s interesting, but we were not crazy about it.
Another point for Microsoft
Microsoft has available on its site a Virtual PC Image with Windows XP and Internet Explorer 6 or 7, so Web Developers can test their applications on both versions of the browser.
I installed the image with IE7. When you start the image you have a couple of shortcuts in the Desktop. One of them is to install the IE7 Readiness Toolkit. When you try to install it, it checks if you are running Genuine Microsoft Software.
Guess what?
This copy of Windows did not pass genuine validation. The product key found on this computer was reported as stolen or lost.
