It syncs when you open the Calendar or Contacts. When you have it set to manual fetch, you can notice net activity when you open the Calendar. I don’t know though if it fetches everytime you open the application or only once per a certain period of time.

I have been searching the net and various forums on how to manually fetch Calendar and Contacts alone. I haven’t found it yet. From what you write above, it seems that you have figured this out. Could you post it or provide pointers.
